On Monday, Sergeant Dowd, a Torrington police officer, came to teach our first D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) lesson. He was back today for our second lesson. D.A.R.E. teaches students about the dangerous health effects of tobacco use and alcohol abuse. However, the main focus of the D.A.R.E. program is to teach students to make good decisions in life. Topics such as responsibility, peer pressure, stress management and even cyber-bullying will be addressed. Sergeant Dowd will be here once a week for the next ten weeks. After the lessons, he stays for lunch and recess so he can develop a relationship with the students. This helps them learn that police officers are approachable and here to help!

This week, students have been working with Geoboards to help them multiply fractions. In this area model, they make rectangles with fractional dimensions on their Geoboards and sketch the rectangle on a grid to find the area. They have been doing very well with this hands-on activity, and in the process, they have begun to discover a general rule for multiplying fractions! In February, students conducted several investigations to learn about chemical changes. As part of the investigation, they watched video clips on the Mystery Science website, discussed ideas, conducted experiments and gathered evidence. They learned that a solution of vinegar and salt can cause chemical changes on a penny, and if the penny is left in the solution over night, it can coat a steel nail in copper! Yesterday, students wore their pajamas to school and listened to a reading of The Polar Express. It was so much fun! Today, students dressed their best and enjoyed an early Thanksgiving meal together at lunch. They all looked so nice today!
Grade five students running for student council gave their speeches in front of their peers today. They all did a wonderful job. Voting will take place on Friday. Good luck to everyone! As a culmination of our phases of the moon unit, we are collaborating with our new library/media specialist, Ms. Vint, to create Sway presentations. Students are very excited about adding text and pictures to their presentations! Students worked in pairs to find factors for a target number (product). The first player to get four products in a row on the game board won! This was a great way to introduce partner work and cooperation in math. We had an awesome time at the Yard Goats game yesterday! We could not have asked for better weather or seats!!! |
