Students worked with a partner to investigate response time. They learned that there is a slight delay from the time the brain perceives a stimulus until they respond.

We attended a school-wide assembly to kick off our Look for the Good campaign. Each morning for two weeks, students thought and wrote about what they are grateful for. Students made a "rubber band banjo" out of a ruler and rubber band to investigate how sound waves travel. Our fifth graders have been learning about light, lenses and color in science. Yesterday, they conducted an experiment to find out how an object's color changes when viewed through a different colored filter. Ask your student about it! On Friday, students running for Student Council gave speeches to their peers about why they would make good candidates. It was evident that the students put a lot of time and effort into their speeches! It takes courage to get up and speak in front of a crowd. Congratulations to all who ran! We began a new unit on volume in math this week. Students worked together to construct boxes and figure out how many cubes would fit in each box. In this hands-on lesson, they developed a conceptual understanding of volume. They used this learning to figure out a formula for volume. Ask your child how to find the volume of a box! Last week, fire fighters from the Torrington Fire Department visited Southwest School to review fire safety. Students had the opportunity to visit the fire trailer and climb down the ladder to escape the simulated fire. We have been very busy these first weeks of school! During science, we have been reviewing the steps of the Scientific Method and discussing what constitutes a fair test. In order to prepare for our quiz next week, students worked in groups to review what they have learned. A matching game is a great way to study because it helps students learn the material while having fun! We had Austin Dailey (a.k.a. Red Supreme) visit today to teach us some dance moves! We had a blast! |
